Our mission is to promote and increase diversity in genomics. Our programs are designed to train students in genomics and related sciences and to provde mechanisms for them to pursue higher levels of education. Our department is also a conduit for the community at large to learn more about genomics and human health.
The Outreach Department at the McDonnell Genome Institute was established in 2003, in response to the National Human Genome Research Institute's (NHGRI) Minority Action Plan (MAP). The goal of the Outreach Department is to:
- Prepare undergraduates for careers in genome sciences through research opportunities that are focused on graduate studies as the next career level.
- Establish mutually beneficial partnerships with minority-serving institutions, which will build a pipeline of students and faculty for our research programs.
- Provide faculty at minority-serving institutions with research opportunities that will enhance their curriculum.
- Facilitate public interaction with the McDonnell Genome Institute in order to educate the public, stimulate interest in genome sciences and genomic medicine, and to measure the impact of these interactions.
