Research Accomplishments & Interests

Dr. Makedonka Mitreva joined Washington University School of Medicine in 2002 and currently serves as Assistant Director of The Genome Institute and Research Assistant Professor of Genetics. Dr. Mitreva is applying integrated approaches to the exploration of genome data, prompting a deeper understanding of an organism at the molecular level. She supervises the Integrated Genomics group that provides a data management platform and performs comprehensive analysis of transcriptomes, genomes and metagenomes in a comparative context.

Dr. Mitreva has led the world's largest effort to sequence transcriptomes of human, animal and plant parasitic nematodes, and currently directs the sequencing of the genomes of numerous parasitic nematodes and drug resistant strains. This work is accelerating both basic research as well as the development of effective diagnostics, vaccines and new drugs.

Dr. Mitreva and her group make their data available on www.nematode.net, a publicly shared resource dedicated to the study of parasitic nematodes. Coupled with statistical tools, this data provides the scientific community with a solid platform for comparative metabolomics and functional genomics in nematodes. She focuses particularly on metazoan protein evolution and other molecular characteristics that may serve as potential drug targets.

Dr. Mitreva is also involved in exploring the human microbiome (the collection of microbes that colonize the human body) in a functional context. She makes use of computational tools to enable structural and functional characterization of these microbial communities. This comparative metagenomics work will lead to a deeper understanding of how these organisms influence human physiology, nutrition, immunity and development.

Other Biographical Information

Dr. Mitreva received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, Macedonia and a Ph.D. from the foremost European center for nematology - Wageningen University and Research Centre (WURC) in The Netherlands.
