Because of the recent media coverage about race and intelligence, we at
the Genome Sequencing Center would like to go on record regarding this
issue. Based on our collective extensive training and experience in
biology and genetics, we do not support any notion of intellectual
inferiority based on race, ethnicity, or gender. Furthermore, we know
of no scientific evidence that demonstrates that this is the case.
The GSC has worked very hard over the years to ensure a diverse work
force at our center. We also have a strong community outreach program
of which at least 40% of our participants are from underrepresented
groups. This past summer we launched our new Opportunities in Genomics
Research program where college students, all minorities, conducted
research on our campus. In addition, the GSC has formed partnerships
with minority serving institutions of higher learning, where students
and faculty will have designated slots in our summer programs.
We separate ourselves from any theory that one race is not as
intelligent as another. We believe that diversity in genetics research
is vital to the future of this science and we have taken great strides
to put this into practice.
