Jacob Woessner

My name is Jacob Woessner and I am a rising senior studying Biology at Columbus State University. I am very interested in translational medicine and would like to pursue an MD-PhD related to genomics and GWAS research. I am passionate about preventive medicine and hope to contribute to our understanding of chronic conditions like heart disease.

Research Area

This summer I have been working in the Dantas Lab studying the preterm infant gut microbiome. Preterm infants are given significant amounts of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance is always a concern. Currently, my work focuses on investigating the plasmid transmission of antibiotic resistance genes by culturing several species of bacteria contained in stool samples collected from a cohort of preterm infants. We hope to eventually identify plasmids that are clinically relevant in the development of antibiotic resistant infections.
